PS5 Overheating Repair Case – Deep Clean & Liquid Metal Service
A customer recently brought this PS5 to our Ashmore store with a serious overheating problem. While playing NBA, the console would normally run for around 20 minutes before freezing, shutting itself down and displaying an overheating warning.
After opening the PS5, we found heavy dust build-up around the fan, power supply and cooling system. The original liquid metal coverage on the APU had also become uneven.
Therefore, we carried out a full internal deep clean and reapplied fresh liquid metal before testing the console again.

What was causing the PS5 overheating problem?
The first problem was the amount of dust inside the console.
Dust had built up around the fan, power supply area and cooling system. Over time, this can restrict airflow and reduce the PS5’s ability to remove heat efficiently.
In this case, the customer was experiencing freezing, automatic shutdowns and overheating warnings during gameplay.
A basic external clean would not have been enough because much of the dust was located deep inside the console. For this reason, the PS5 was fully opened so the internal cooling areas could be cleaned properly.
PS5 Liquid Metal Inspection
During the internal inspection, we also checked the liquid metal between the APU and cooling plate.
The original liquid metal coverage had become uneven, with reduced coverage visible around part of the contact area. Because the PS5 relies on liquid metal to transfer heat from the APU to the cooling system, good coverage is important for effective heat transfer.
We cleaned the contact areas and reapplied fresh liquid metal to the APU and cooling plate.
PS5 Deep Cleaning and Liquid Metal Service
The console received a full internal deep clean, including the fan, power supply area and cooling system.
Once the internal dust had been removed, fresh liquid metal was applied and the console was carefully reassembled.
We then carried out extended testing using NBA, the same type of game that had previously caused the overheating problem.
After approximately two hours of continuous gameplay:
- No freezing
- No unexpected shutdown
- No overheating warning
- Console continued running normally
